Game #3 tonight – Leafs vs. Pens

Posted: October 13, 2010 in Hockey

Tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins should be a great test of what the team is really made of this year. Over the first two games, we have seen a glimmer of hope that we have a team that plays as one. The first game against the Canadiens was a bit sloppy, but they definitely turned it up a notch against the Ottawa Senators a couple nights later. Pittsburgh has not had the greatest start, but we’ll see if the boys in blue are ready to match up against Sid, Malkin, Staal & Co.

All I can say for now is…

GO LEAFS GO!!

Phaneuf presented as CaptainSo the 2010/11 NHL season is almost upon us. The Leafs start their new season on Thursday against none other than Montreal. With Dion Phaneuf named as Captain, that’s one gap filled that the team has had for the last two seasons – a leader on the ice.

Has the team improved over last year? I think so…goaltending should be much more stable at the very least. They have lots of depth on the blue line. The burning question that is keeping me up at nights (ok well not really) is whether the forward lines are going to be able to find the back of the oppositions’ net on a consistent basis. If the pre-season games were any indication (and I realize that one should not read too much into those), I do get the feeling that the Leafs are going to be able to score. I also saw some improved special teams…the Power Play and Penalty Kill were much more solid than the attempts last season, and I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping that it wasn’t just “pre-season luck”!

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to the new season. I also start my hockey season on Wednesday night with a new team and league, so hoping that is as fun as in the past!

0-6-1??

That’s what my Toronto Maple Leafs have accomplished to start out the 2009/10 season.

Wow.

Each game you think that this will be the night they break out of this downward spiral, and each night the game gets turned off in favour of some other TV show or movie, as it’s too painful to watch! I don’t even know how to explain the lack of skill that the team is showing. At first, everyone thought it was just the players getting used to each other, or “gelling”, but that excuse is getting old very quickly. Now they just look like a bunch of guys playing pickup hockey…no teamwork…definitely no defence!

They have this whole week off and then they’re in Vancouver to start a road trip…with the way they’ve been getting booed off the ice, they are all probably looking forward to not having to play at the ACC for a couple of weeks. Let’s hope they can get off this seven-game road trip a little closer to a .500 record (yeah, riiiiiiiiight)!

In NCWHL news, our team played yesterday morning and although it was a close game it was a disappointing 1-0 loss to Sloot Masonry. They beat us to the puck and managed to get one lucky screened shot past our goalie in the first period. I felt good out on the ice. Think my lungs are finally catching up to being back out there 🙂

We play two games back-to-back this coming weekend – Saturday night and then Sunday afternoon…hopefully I can keep up to that pace!

Leafs are now 0-3…

Wow, what a different start to the season than fans were expecting, especially after the great pre-season we were treated to. It seems the team either has absolutely no confidence, or they are just trying to do too much. I guess Ron Wilson has the team going through a “tough practice” this morning. I think they just need to get back to basics, and start moving the puck better. Last night against the Senators, they just didn’t seem to have any momentum, especially after Viktor Stalberg got knocked out of the game by Anton Volchenkov. It was a good, clean hit, and I’m sure I join most of Leaf Nation hoping that Stalberg isn’t out too long! The penalty shot pictured below obviously didn’t help get them back in the game either.

Let’s just hope that Wilson can get them into the win colum for the Saturday night game against the Penguins…I’m not panicking yet, in fact I’d rather they work the kinks out now instead of starting out 5-0 or something and then sliding (anyone remember the Blue Jays’ start to the ’09 season??). I still think this is going to be a great, entertaining season, so let’s go boys!

GO LEAFS GO!!

Game #1 out of the way…

Posted: October 2, 2009 in Hockey, Kev

Well, Game #1 is out of the way, and we were on the right end of a 5-3 victory over Guelph City Mazda last night. We have a great bunch of players, and hopefully as we play together more, we’ll continue to get stronger. It was a great time, too, which to me is most important. It felt great to be back on the ice! I am feeling it a bit today (stiff) but it was worth it!

The Leafs, however, were on the other end of their season opener last night against the Habs…just over 12 seconds left in overtime and Josh Gorges smacks in the winner. Oh well, it is only the first game, and the Leafs did completely outshoot the Canadiens and generally outplayed them (nice to see Stajan get two goals to start of the season right).

I’m on my way up to The Grand Georgian at Blue Mountain this afternoon. Every year around this time, SYNNEX holds our annual sales conference. All of our reps from across the country come in for a weekend of training, team-building and mingling with our key vendor partners. Tonight is our vendor pavilion, where we will showcase 50+ of our vendors’ products. It’ll be a late night, with a long drive home after, but well worth it for future sales potential!

Hockey starts tonight!

Yep, in more ways than one, too. The NHL regular season starts tonight for the Leafs, and if they can play like they did in pre-season, it should be a fun season to watch if nothing else.

But probably even more exciting is that I start playing again tonight too! Yep, after four years of not playing we have managed to get a SYNNEX team together in the Guelph Non-Contact League. A bunch of us ex-EMJ RAMs players are making our post-retirement comebacks, and it should be a good time! I probably shouldn’t draw attention to this, but on the right side of the site, you will see a link to the NCWHL under “Kev’s Links” where you can follow the league, our team (SYNNEX) and our players (don’t watch my stats – they’ll probably stay at “0” for the season.

It will definitely be fun to get back into the action and get some more exercise regularly, although, I admit I need to get the first game jitters over and done with.

I guess it’s PVR-time for the Leafs/ Habs game tonight!
